An armoire is a tall cabinet with shelves and drawers that are hidden by doors. The French word “armarie” which means “bookcase or cupboard” is the root of the word “armoire”. “Armarie” was derived from the Latin word “armarium,” which means “closet for keeping tools or weapons.” This refers to the primary use of the armoire before it was transformed into a piece of furniture for general storage.

In the 16th century, armoires were first used to store armor and weapons. These large pieces of furniture stood directly on the floor without any feet. Armoires from this time period often had painted interiors and exteriors and complex, Flemish-inspired designs.

Armoires were first used to store objects like clothing and linen in the 17th century. During this time, armoires grew higher and thinner and included a rack for hanging clothing. In the late 17th century, Andre-Charles Boulle made a renowned armoire for Louis XIV.

The design of the armoire changed to having feet, shelves, and drawers. Armoires were used to store things other than clothing in the late 20th century, like electronics and documents. Due to its structure and appearance, it was often employed as accent furniture.

Both the armoire and the wardrobe have essentially identical construction and are mostly used for storing clothing. The armoire has shelves and a hanging rack, and it is bigger than a wardrobe. There is usually only a hanging rack in the wardrobe. An armoire offers a wider variety of storage alternatives compared to the wardrobe. Armoires frequently cost more than wardrobes because of their rich decorations and carvings.
