During George II’s reign as King of Great Britain in the 1700s, the bachelor chest was a popular piece of furniture. The bachelor chest of the Georgian era was typically built of walnut, oak, or oak veneer. The bachelor chest’s fold-over top was its most distinguishing component. This fold-over top is supported by runners or knobbed lopers (slides) and can be used for writing purposes.<\/p>\n

In the 18th century, bachelor chests featured a brushing slide that could be drawn out for writing or setting out clothing.
