The Chinese made use of natural dyes from plants and insects for more than 5, 000 years. The invention of synthetic dyes began sometime in the 19th century. Piece-dyeing is the most common and economical process of dyeing fabric, over a shorter period of time.<\/p>\n<p>Another method is solution-dyeing (dope or top-dyeing). This involves coloring the raw material first before turning it into actual yarn. The pre-dyed yarn may then be used for weaving. Solution-dyeing is a quick process of coloring and is considered more sustainable because it consumes water less and produces less carbon dioxide. Yarn-dyed fabric is thicker and heavier thus it has more \u201cbody\u201d and feels more substantial.
